The room was swallowed in total darkness
Amelia’s breath caught in her throat as the sudden silence pressed down on all three of them. She could barely make out Ethan’s outline in the dim glow leaking through the window blinds — a ghost of a man she once loved and mourned, now standing before her as if pulled back from the dead.
“Ethan?” she whispered, reaching out through the dark. “Where are you?”
No answer.
Instead, she felt Liam’s hand brush against hers. “Stay close,” he murmured. His tone was steady, but she could feel the tension running through his fingers.
A faint metallic sound echoed from somewhere near the door — the sound of something dropping, then footsteps retreating down the hall.
Liam cursed under his breath. “She’s here.”
Amelia’s pulse pounded. “Clara?”
The power flickered back on with a snap, flooding the room with harsh white light.
Ethan was gone.
The front door stood ajar, rain still pelting against the floor where he had once stood.
Amelia rushed forward, her heart in her mouth. “Ethan!” she cried out into the hallway, but there was nothing. Only the echo of her voice fading into the storm.
Liam pulled her back inside, shutting the door and locking it. “He must’ve known she was close. That’s why he ran.”
Amelia turned, trembling. “But he came here for help! Why would he just leave like that?”
Liam met her eyes, grim. “Because if he’s telling the truth… Clara is closer than we think.”
By morning, the storm had calmed, but the unease remained.
Amelia hadn’t slept. She sat at the kitchen table, staring at her phone — dozens of missed calls from unknown numbers, and one text from a private ID that made her blood run cold.
“You should’ve come alone.”
She knew it was Clara.
Liam stood by the counter, arms crossed. “You can’t go,” he said quietly. “Whatever Ethan was running from — it’s dangerous.”
“But if I don’t,” she said, voice breaking, “we’ll never know the truth. Ethan might still be in danger. And Clara won’t stop until she gets what she wants.”
Liam sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Then I’m coming with you.”
“No.”
The word came out sharper than she intended. “If she sees you with me, she’ll know I didn’t listen. She’ll disappear again — and we’ll lose every chance to end this.”
Liam’s jaw tightened. “You think I’m just going to let you walk into her trap alone?”
Amelia took a deep breath. “You said it yourself last night — you’ve walked beside me every step of the way. But this step… I need to take it myself.”
Hours later, the sky hung heavy with clouds as Amelia arrived at the old warehouse by the river — the same place Ethan had been last seen before he vanished.
The place smelled of rust and rain. Her shoes echoed against the wet floor as she moved deeper inside.
“Clara,” she called out. “You wanted me alone. I’m here.”
A figure stepped out from behind a metal pillar.
It was her.
Clara looked different — sharper, colder, her once gentle eyes now distant and calculating. She wore a dark coat and a faint smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
“I was wondering how long it would take you,” Clara said softly. “You’ve always been so predictable, Amelia.”
“What have you done to Ethan?” Amelia demanded.
Clara tilted her head. “Saved him. From himself. From you.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You think you know what love is,” Clara said, stepping closer. “But love is dangerous when it’s built on lies. Ethan never told you what he did — what he owed me.”
Amelia’s chest tightened. “You’re lying.”
Clara smiled. “Am I? Then why do you think he ran? Why did he vanish instead of facing you? Why does he still keep my name in every secret he hides?”
For a moment, Amelia’s world tilted. Could it be true?
But before she could speak, a familiar voice echoed through the warehouse.
“She’s right,” Ethan said, emerging from the shadows — his face pale, his eyes haunted.
“Amelia,” he said softly, “I wasn’t running from Clara. I was running from what I did… to both of you.”
Her heart nearly stopped.
“What… did you do?” she whispered.
Ethan’s voice cracked. “You
deserve to know. But once you do, you’ll never see me the same again.”
