Amelia felt her pulse quicken. “She’s giving orders now. A deadline.”
Liam’s expression tightened. “This is clearly a trap.”
“I know.”
“Then why do you look like you’re considering going?”
She swallowed hard. “Because if there's even a 1% chance that Ethan is alive, I can’t turn away from that.”
Liam let out a sharp breath, running his fingers through his hair in frustration. “What about me? You think I’m just going to stand by while you walk into who knows what?”
She held his gaze, feeling the weight of the moment press down on them, thick with all that had been left unsaid.
“You’re not the one she asked for,” Amelia said softly. “This is between Ethan and me. I have to confront it.”
He stepped closer once more, his voice now trembling with a sense of fear, not anger. “And what happens if you don’t come back?”
Those words broke her heart because she didn’t have a single answer to offer.
