In this chapter, the truth starts to emerge, and danger seems ever closer. Jump into Chapter 7 and join Amelia as she figures out what to do next.
The notification on her phone lit up again: “He’s not who you think he is.” The words felt almost tangible, pressing against Amelia’s chest. Her hand still lingered over the lock.
She could hear Liam’s voice on the other side, low and urgent. “Amelia, please. Let me in. I can explain.”
The hallway light streaming through the door cast a narrow beam across the floor. Rain tapped against the window like impatient fingers. Amelia's mind raced, possibilities spiraling faster than the last. Did Liam know more than he was letting on? Had Ethan placed his trust in him? Or was there someone out to sabotage them both?
Her breath hitched. She was sure of two things: Ethan’s letter mentioned Liam, and someone had gone to great lengths to deliver that envelope to her. That person claimed Ethan didn’t trust himself. Who else would know to send such a warning if not someone close to them?
With resolve, she turned the lock and creaked the door open a little.
Liam stood drenched in the doorway, relief and something unreadable flickering in his eyes. He raised his hands like a man yielding. “Amelia, there’s no easy way to put this. I — I knew about Clara. I tried to tell Ethan, but he wouldn’t listen.”
She pulled the door open wider, letting in the scent of rain-soaked air. “You knew?” Her voice wavered. “Why didn’t you tell me? Why keep it a secret?”
Liam swallowed hard. “I wanted to protect you. Ethan asked me to stay quiet. He thought it would keep Clara safer. He wanted me to look after you if anything went wrong.”
Amelia’s heart jolted. “If anything went wrong?” She thought of the message that had called them to the bridge, the shadowy figure, that envelope with her initials. “Where is Ethan, Liam? Why won’t he answer?”
Liam’s jaw tightened. “I tried to track him down. The last I heard, he was with someone who promised help — someone who claimed they could keep Clara safe. But then Ethan vanished. I’ve been searching, Amelia. I promise.”
Before she could press him further, a faint noise came from the living room — a soft metallic click as if someone had opened a window. Liam stiffened. “You weren’t alone when I came,” he said, scanning the dimly lit room. “I thought I was.”
Amelia moved toward the sound, each step filled with dread. On the coffee table lay a single photograph face down. Her fingers trembled as she flipped it over.
It was a picture of Ethan, grinning at a train platform, his arm around a woman whose face was cropped out of the frame. On the back, a single name scrawled in Ethan’s handwriting: CLARA.
Another message buzzed on her phone. No sender, once again.
> “Don’t trust what you see. Check the timestamp.”
Amelia’s thumb hovered over the message details. The timestamp matched the exact minute the photo had been taken — but the location was from a city two hours away from where Ethan had last been seen. Someone was moving pieces faster than she could keep up with.
Liam reached for her hand. “We need to go. Now.” His voice was urgent, brittle.
She looked into his eyes, which were desperate and sincere. But so many truths had already unraveled into lies. Hope and fear crashed inside her like storm waves.
She grabbed her coat. “Where are we headed?”
“To the station,” Liam replied. “If that photo is recent, there might be a clue — a ticket, a receipt, anything. Ethan could be close by. Or he might be leaving.”
Together, they stepped out into the rain, each footstep feeling like a tiny promise. Amelia’s phone buzzed again, illuminating her wet face with its glow.
Another message. No name.
> “He left to protect you. But he didn’t disappear alone.”
The words felt like both a riddle and a wound.
Amelia clenched her jaw. “Who sent that?” she demanded.
The only response was the night — and the distant echo of footsteps fading away down the corridor behind them.
