Chapter 6: The Truth We Hide.

The café felt colder than usual. It wasn’t just the chill in the air—perhaps it was the heavy truth looming over them.

Amelia sat across from Liam, her fingers making little circles around the edge of her cup. The clock on the wall ticked away, each second ringing out louder than her own heartbeat.

“Do you really think we should meet this person?” she finally asked.

Liam leaned back in his chair, his gaze locked on the phone resting between them—the message still shining bright on the screen.

> “Meet me tomorrow at 7. I’ll tell you everything.”

He sighed, the breath escaping him slowly. “I don’t think we have much choice left.”

Amelia’s expression darkened. “What if it’s a trap?”

“Then we’d walk away,” Liam replied calmly. “But if it turns out to be genuine… we can finally stop guessing.”

A knot formed in her stomach. For days, she’d been tormented by Ethan’s absence, the strange photo, and all the unanswered questions. Now, someone else was stepping into the dark corners of that mystery—and the uncertainty felt far worse than the pain.

Raindrops ran down the windows, the soft, steady sound almost soothing. Amelia couldn’t help but remember Ethan’s voice, his promises, and what had been their last conversation. The memory stung more than she thought it would.

She murmured, “What if what we discover ruins everything we’ve got left?”

Liam met her gaze, his eyes warm yet unwavering. “Then maybe it wasn’t worth holding onto.”

They both fell silent for a long stretch, but their quiet wasn’t empty—it carried a weighty dialogue of its own.

The next evening arrived sooner than either Amelia or Liam anticipated. Amelia got to the riverside bridge a bit early, the spot where the message had instructed them to meet. The city lights danced on the water, turning every ripple into a secret that begged to be uncovered.

She noticed Liam coming her way—wearing a dark jacket and holding an umbrella. His face showed that he hadn’t gotten much rest either.

“You’re here,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

“I said I’d be.” He glanced around, looking for any signs of their intended companions. “Do you see them?”

She shook her head, feeling the air thick with tension, as if the city itself was holding its breath.

Minutes ticked by. Cars cruised past, and rain drizzled softly against the pavement. Then, a black sedan slowed beside the curb.

The window slid down just enough for a voice to call out, “Amelia?”

Her heart skipped a beat. A man stepped out—mid-thirties, tall, with a hat casting a shadow over part of his face. He didn’t seem dangerous, but there was something about him that felt mysterious.

Liam moved a step closer, a protective stance. “Who are you?” he asked.

The man’s eyes darted between them. “I’m someone who owes Ethan more than I can really explain.”

Amelia’s heart sank. “What do you mean by that?”

The man reached into his jacket, causing both Amelia and Liam to tense up, but he simply pulled out a small brown envelope.

“This is for you,” he said softly, extending it towards her. “He wanted you to have it in case things went awry.”

Amelia hesitated, but eventually took the envelope, its weight surprising her. She flipped it over in her hands—there was no name, just her initials scrawled in Ethan’s familiar handwriting.

“How did you come by this?” she questioned.

The man’s expression softened. “He trusted me. But if you’re reading that now… it means he didn’t trust himself.”

Before she could inquire further, he stepped back towards his car.

“Wait!” Liam shouted. “Where is he now?”

The man paused for a moment, then uttered a line that sent a chill through the night thicker than the rain:

“Sometimes, the truth hides in the people closest to you.”

With that, he climbed back into the car and disappeared into the mist.

Back in her apartment, Amelia found herself alone again. The clock showed 11:48 p.m. when, finally, she opened the envelope.

Inside, there were two items: a folded letter and a photo.

With trembling fingers, she unfolded the letter. Ethan’s handwriting sprawled across the page — hurried, shaky, but undeniably familiar.

> “Amelia,

If you’re reading this, it means I couldn’t tell you the truth myself.

There are things I’ve kept hidden — not out of choice, but necessity. You once asked why I left so abruptly that night. The reality is… I wasn’t alone, but not for the reasons you might expect.

That woman — her name is Clara. She’s my sister.”*

Amelia froze, tears blurring the words on the page.

> “She came to me that night because she was in trouble. She didn’t want anyone to find out — especially you — because her life was in jeopardy. Someone was after her. I thought that by leaving, I could protect you.”

She pressed her palm against her chest. “Oh my God…”

> “I lied because I was terrified. But now, the danger is closer than I realized. If you receive this letter, look for the name inside the envelope — it’s the only person who can help you make sense of everything.”

Amelia dug back into the envelope and pulled out a small folded card. It read:

Liam Osei.

Her eyes widened. “Liam?”

As the weight of the realization hit her, the letter slipped from her grasp.

He knew. He was involved — or at least Ethan thought he was the one who could help. But why hadn’t he said anything?

Her phone buzzed, shattering the silence. It was a text from Liam.

> “We need to talk. Now.”

Her heart raced as she quickly typed back:

> “You knew, didn’t you?”

No response.

Just minutes later, there was a knock on her door.

“Amelia,” Liam’s voice came from outside, calm yet strained. “Please, let me in. I can explain.”

She hesitated, her heart pounding. The letter still lay on her desk, its words seared into her memory.

> “Sometimes, the truth hides in the people closest to you.”

Taking a deep breath, she moved toward the door... and hesitated again.

What if the truth was darker than all the lies?

Her hand hovered over the lock.

“Amelia,” Liam pleaded once more, his voice tinged with strain. “Please… don’t make me talk through the door.”

Her lips parted, as she whispered to herself, “What did you hide from me?”

The silence stretched heavily.

Then — a sudden noise. A crash.

The lights flickered once, twice, and then went out entirely.

“Liam?” she called, her voice cracking.

There was no reply. Only the sound of rain — and, unnervingly, footsteps. Slow. Closing in.

Cliffhanger:

Amelia’s phone flickered to life again in the dark, vibrating in her palm.

One new message.

No name. No number.

> “He’s not who you think he is.”

She turned toward the door, her heart racing with a mix of fear and disbelief.

“Who are you?” she barely managed to whisper into the shadows.

But there was no answer — just silence and the faint echo of her own fear reflected back at her from the window.

💬 Question for Readers:

If you were in Amelia’s shoes, would you open the door and confront Liam — or would you take off before uncovering what he's really hiding?
