Chapter 4 – The Echo Between Hearts.

   (Continuation from Chapter 3)

The phone screen still flickered in Amelia’s shaky hand—Liam’s message looking back at her like a ghostly whisper through the storm outside.

“Don’t make a decision you’ll regret.”

Her breath hitched in her throat. The room seemed to shrink, growing heavier around her. Ethan was still there—his suitcase sat waiting by the door, his gaze glued to her, longing for a response she just couldn’t muster.

“Who’s it from?” Ethan asked, his voice steady, but his eyes revealed a deeper emotion—fear.

Amelia didn’t respond. She couldn’t find the words. They felt like jagged pieces lodged in her mouth. Instead, she locked the screen and placed the phone face down on the table, as if by concealing it, she could somehow erase the reality of the situation.

“Liam?” he pressed, his voice wavering slightly.

Her silence spoke volumes.

Ethan stepped closer, his voice heavy with emotion. “Amelia, I came back to fight for us. But you need to be honest with me. Is there someone else?”

Tears filled her eyes. “I honestly don’t know where we stand anymore, Ethan. You were gone for so long that I lost track of what we had.”

The thunder roared outside, mirroring the turmoil in her heart.

He sighed, rubbing his temples in frustration. “Do you think I didn’t feel that distance? Every night, I told myself I was doing this for you. For us.”

“Then why did it seem like I was the only one putting in the effort?” she whispered.

The rain kept tapping against the glass—soft, endless, and cruel. When Ethan finally turned away, Amelia felt her chest cave in. Love shouldn’t hurt this way, she thought. But maybe real love always did.As the sound of his footsteps faded down the hall, she picked up the phone again, reading Liam’s message one more time. Her fingers hovered above the keyboard. She typed… then deleted… then typed again.“What did you mean by that?”She hesitated before pressing send.

Liam’s POV

(Switch scene – earlier that evening)

Liam sat on the edge of his couch, phone clutched tight, replaying their last conversation in his head.

He could still see the way Amelia smiled that morning — soft, uncertain, beautiful. He hadn’t meant to get attached. She was supposed to be just a neighbor, someone who needed a bit of kindness. But somehow, she’d become the thought that lived between every heartbeat.

And then he’d seen the photo.

Amelia and Ethan — her husband — smiling in a memory frozen on her shelf. It had hit him like a wave.

“She’s not yours to fix,” he told himself quietly. But his heart didn’t listen.

That’s when he sent the message.

“Don’t make a decision you’ll regret.”

Now, he regretted sending it. He imagined her reading it with Ethan right there — the man she still loved, or maybe used to love.

His chest tightened. What if she never spoke to him again? What if he’d pushed her back into the arms of someone who didn’t deserve her?

He stood up, pacing. “Maybe she needs closure, not confusion,” he muttered.

But deep down, he knew — he wasn’t ready to let her go.

His phone buzzed. It was her. Amelia texted: “What did you mean by that?” Liam felt his heart racing. He took a seat, his fingers hovering above the keyboard. How could he explain that what he meant was everything he couldn’t put into words? He typed, deleted, and then tried again. “I meant… Don’t let fear make your choice for you.” He wasn’t sure if it was the best thing to say, but it was honest.

Amelia read his reply over and over. “Don’t let fear make your choice for you.” Fear. Was that really what this was? Was it fear of being alone? Or fear of making the wrong choice? Her heart softly called out Liam’s name, but her mind was still tied to Ethan’s promises. A single tear rolled down her cheek as she murmured into the quiet room, “I don’t even know who I am without all this.” Outside, a flash of lightning illuminated the night—a fleeting moment of clarity—before plunging her back into darkness.

 Cliffhanger:
That evening, as the rain transformed into a gentle drizzle, Amelia stood by her window, watching the city fade in the distance. Her phone buzzed again—but this time, it wasn't a message from Liam or Ethan. It was an unknown number. The text read: “Amelia, you don’t know the whole story.” A chill ran through her. She stared at the screen, her heart pounding. “Who are you?” she breathlessly asked. No answer. Just silence and the rhythm of her heartbeat echoing in the stillness.

Question for Readers 💬 If you were in Amelia’s shoes, would you remain loyal to Liam or give Ethan a chance to show he’s changed? And who do you think sent that last message?
